Grassington

Wharfedale

Wharfedale is one of the prettiest dales in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, with rugged outcrops in the limestone cliffs and the river Wharfe wandering all the way from its source high on the fells down to Ilkley and beyond. Along the valley lie the villages of Grassington and Burnsall.

Grassington

Grassington is the largest village in Wharfedale and offers visitors a wealth of Dales history, a centre from which to enjoy many spectacular walks, either along the Dales Way over the hills or along the River Wharfe. There are a variety of pubs and cafes in the village together with a wide selection of shops, including an awarding winning butcher, clothes and shoe shops, museum, craft and outdoor shops.

If you visit during June there is the reknowned Grassington Festival which in recent years has attracted such people as Dara O'Brien, Toyah Wilcox, Paul Merton, Aled Jones and Catherine Jenkins. During December there are the Dickensian Markets where the village goes back to the 19th century.

For more information about the facilities and activities on offer in Grassington visit www.grassington.uk.com

Burnsall

Burnsall is one of the prettiest villages in Wharfedale with its village green and arched bridge spanning the River Wharfe. Burnsall is famous as being the birthplace of the original 'Dick Whittington'.

The village has two pubs and a tea room, all serving good food. There is also a village shop which is an Aladdin's Cave, you can order your newspapers, milk, fresh bread etc. (If you ring your order through before you arrive we will ensure it is awaiting you on your arrival). There is a very pretty church, old chapel and school which are of particular architectural and historic interest. To find out more about Burnsall visit www.yorkshiredales.org
